Notes for ANTHONY WAYNE:

I have tried to find original sources for Capt. Anthony Wayne, they are extremely hard to find. To make matters worse, the Irish burned almost every English record and connection in Ireland. I have not paid the fee to obtain records from Ireland yet. The Irish Historical society has informed me that a record does exist with Several Waynes in Wicklow.

Several Authors have either copied each other or found sources on Capt. Waynes military career in the Marlbourough Campaigns.

English Ancestry of the Waynes by Edwin J. Sellers 1927

There are many records available to family history researchers, such as polling records, tax records, marriage, baptism, death and visitation records. Each country has different types of records. England proper, has a history of being conquered and invaded over many centuries which led to feudal systems. Eventually the system of a King and Baronies were instituted. William the Conquer, 1044 AD, conquered England, and immediately set out to see just what he had under his throne. He sent men out to all known parts of his kingdom to visit as many subjects as possible. This was a huge undertaking that took several years to accomplish. The work was written in Latin and eventually became known as the "Book of Doom".

Today thanks largely to Genealogist; many of the records are becoming centralized. Rare books are being re-published and many records and books are in electronic form for easy access. This makes research a little more accessible and available to more people with limited resources. It is possible to find rare books through the Internet and to make connections with other researchers interested in the same area of research.

A great deal of my source material for this chapter comes from Edwin Jaquett Sellers book "English Ancestry Of The Wayne Family of Pennsylvania, 1927. I also have been indebted to the works of Sir Bernard Burke.

The name of Wayne, its variant spellings, i.e. Wain, Waine, Way, Wayn go back to the Anglo-Saxon period. There was no common way to uniformly spell names. Often they were spelled how they sounded. Today in genealogy research names are given a soundex code, Wayne is number 500. In my research I have seen cases where the same family spelled Wayne different between close relatives. The most common are Wain and Wayne, Waine.

From Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary: Waghen, or Wawn, A parish in the union of Beverley, Middle Division of the wapentake of Holderness, East Riding of Yorkshire, 4 miles S. E. from Beverley. The parish, including the hamlet of Meux, comprises 5600 acres. The river Hull is to the West. Meux is celebrated for the remains of its once splendid abbey. The Church (St. Peter) was erected in 1211.

The place, Waghen or Wawn, appears to have given its name to a family originating in that vicinity, from which the family of Wayne was derived . Probate records at Lichfield referred to a Wayne family of Derbyshire, which have the names of Anthony, Gabriel, Frances, Isaac and Humphrey, the same family names that appear in the PA family. Probate records of Lichfield, Staffordshire, show that a Wayne family settled in that county as early as 1533.

It appears that Richard Wayne is the first of the family to whom reference has been found in Derbyshire. Derbyshire Charters, by Isaac Herbert Jeayes, London, 1906 No 301: Grant from John Hyklyng of Lynhe, esquire, and Joan his wife, to Richard Wayne, of Herthill, of his land, etc, in the lordship of Birchover called Hill Place, 1431. From this record you would assume that Richard was already of some age, 25-45 possibly, and already married. His son Roger, there is record of a Quitclaim from Roger Waine of Alport, to Henry Vernon 14 May 1492. His sons; John, Humphrey and Ralph.

There is a will of John dated 4 October 1535. He was buried in the Churchyard of All Halowes, Youlgreave . And a will of Ralph Wayne; dated 7 July 1539. To be buried in the church of Sent Margret of Elton. He lists one of his sons as Thomas Wayn. One son Robert was spelled Robte, Wyllm is William.

John son of Ralph, lived in Formark, Repton Parish, County of Derby. He spelled his name John Weyne in a will dated 8 September, 1558. To be buried in the Churchyard of Repton. He had a son named John and he spelled his name as John Wean. He had John and Gilbert Weane and Elizabeth. He was buried 15 February, 1609 in Repton Parish. His will is sealed with the Family arms without a crest.

On to Gabriel Wayne, Yeoman, who died in may 1637 in Thurvaston, county Derby. There are numerous wills and poll records of the area for this family of Waynes. There is John Wayne’s , Yeoman, will dated 23 January 1659. He lived in Newton Solney, County Derby. Then the second Gabriel Wayne, a Captain. He was also a Mayor of the Borough of Chesterfield in 1657, Gabriel Wain. He donated 2 acres of land for a school, the Petty School in Chesterfield. He was married twice. nothing is known of his first wife, but his second wife Martha Saunderson, there is found a historical account in Joswph Hunter’s Hallamshire, History of the Parish of Sheffield, Page 390, Martha, baptized at Sheffield, 9/21/1636 married first a Gilbert Morewood, second Capt. Gabriel Wayne. A note in H. Farnham Burke, of the Heralds College, London: "According to a note here Gabriel Wayne of Newbould in 1668 and of Dronfield 1678 was a great dealer in Iron Mines, died at Norton Hall". One of his sons, Gabriel born 10 December, 1653 has a record in the Patent Roll. Granted by King William II and Mary, S.P. Dom Entry Book 235 pp154&155 granted 16 July 1691 for an invention of making pitch and tar. and in 28 April 1693 for an invention of a smelter of Iron. He was buried 18 Jan. 1722, and his wife Katherine was buried 17 Aug, 1710 He was married twice; Elizabeth Sharpe and Katherine. Capt. Anthony Wayne is the son of Gabriel Wayne and his first wife. He is said to come from Yorkshire, and he bore the same Coat of Arms as John his grandfather.

by Robert B. Wayne]

This is the Capt. Anthony Wayne that fought gallantly and distinguished himself at the Battle of the Boyne. He is the grandfather of Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne. He settled in County Wicklow, Ireland on land granted him for service to the King. It is said he tired of the Irish People and the social habits of Ireland. He made a resolve to move to the New World. The Wayne clan did originate in Yorkshire, and a branch in Derbyshire.

I have copies of the wills of Capt. Anthony Wayne, and of Gen. Anthony Wayne. I have largely concentrated on the Wayne lineage that settled in Chester County, PA. That has been my interest. There are other Waynes still living in England today as well as in New Zealand. The New Zealand branch came from Derbyshire. It appears that either a Wayne moved to Agusta, GA. or he was a direct descendant of the same Waynes of Derbyshire, as an account quotes a witness as saying he had the same Coat of Arms. As yet I do not know how this Wayne is related. From a letter from Miss Elizabeth Clifford Neff, Cleveland, OH to Capt. William Wayne (of Waynesborough), she mentions that Richard Wayne, Jr., of Agusta, GA married Juliana Smyth of Wilmington, Del. Her Father is Gresham Wayne Smyth.

There is a Rev. Henry H. Wayne of New Britain, Conn., who had a genealogy of the Georgia Waynes. Source, from a letter to Capt. Wm. Wayne in Waynesborough, PA.

Capt. Anthony Wayne, settler in Easttown, Chester County, PA, is apparent by all accounts that I can find to date, our ancestor. His Children were born Rathdrum, County Wicklow, Ireland, but the Waynes are definitively of English origin. He lived in Ireland with his wife, Hannah Faulkner and 10 children until 1723. I have not found the reason Capt. Anthony Wayne decided to move to America. I have read accounts that he raised sheep in Ireland and that the market fell through. His lifelong companion and friend, John Hunter apparently moved to America first and he perhaps encouraged Anthony to move to America. History does tell us that the political climate in Ireland at this time was in turmoil as it has been for centuries. There were still small battles and skirmishes being fought in Ireland and perhaps Anthony was concerned for the safety of his family. He never-the-less did board a ship and sailed to America, landing in Boston harbor in 1723, which is indisputable.

The following is a brief history of the Wayne family line:

(I) Captain Anthony Wayne was born in Derbyshire, near the border line of Yorkshire, England, in 1666, and at an early age adopted the profession of arms. While a lad, he served under John Churchill, in Holland, and later under the great Duke of Marlborough, with his friend, John Hunter. While in the army of William of Orange, he was in command of a troop of horse at the Battle of the Boyne, in 1690, where he was still associated with John Hunter. At the conclusion of the war, both settled as graziers in the County of Wicklow, Ireland, on land conferred upon them by William. Captain Wayne emigrated to America with his family in 1723, landing at Boston, Massachusetts, and from there made his way to Chester County, Pennsylvania, where his friend, John Hunter, had settled in 1722. On May 11, 1729, he purchased three hundred and eighty-six acres of land in Easttown township from Thomas Edwards, being named in the deed, "Anthony Wayne, Gentleman." On May 31, 1729, he conveyed forty acres of this land to his son, Francis Wayne, and added about the same amount by purchase in 1735. On February 20, 1738-39, he conveyed the whole plantation to his son, Isaac. Anthony Wayne died in Easttown township, Pennsylvania, December 2, 1739, and was buried in Radnor township, at St. David’s Church, of which he had been a vestryman and pew-holder. Captain Anthony Wayne married, at Rathdrum (southwest of Wicklow), County Wicklow, Ireland, about 1690, to Hannah Faulkner, of Dutch descent.

Children:

1) Francis, born in Ireland, about 1691, died in Chester County, Pennsylvania, January 31, 1763; married Elizabeth Jackson, and had issue.

2) Gabriel, born in Ireland about 1694.

3) Isaac, of whom further.

4) Humphrey, born in 1701, married Priscilla Iddings.

5) Jacob, married Elizabeth.

6) William, born in 1708, died April 22, 1726.

7) John, executor of his father’s will in 1739.

8) Sarah, married James Norton.

9) Anne, Married Samuel McCue.

10) Mary.

The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans: Volume XW Wayne, Henry Constantin epage 337

WAYNE, Anthony, soldier, was born in East-town, Chester county, Pa., Jan. 1, 1745; the only son of Isaac Wayne, the former an army officer, legislator and farmer, whose father was a native of Yorkshire, Eng., removing first to county Wicklow, Ireland, and later o Chestter county, Pa. He attended the Philadelphia academy; became a land surveyor, and upon the recommendation of Benjamin Franklin was employed by a land company in Nova Scotia. In 1769 he was married, and became a farmer and surveyor in Chester county. He was a member of the provincial convention of 1774, assembled to devise a means of settlement of the difficulties between England and the colonies; and of the Pennsylvania convention of the same year; was a delegate to the colonial legislature, 1774-75, and a member of the committee of safety in 1775. On the outbreak of the Revolutionary war he recruited among his neighbors a company which was enlarged into the 4th regiment of Pennsylvania troops; was elected its colonel, Jan. 3, 1776, and was assigned to Gen. John Thomas's brigade of the Northern army, Jan. 3, 1776. He attacked the British at Three Rivers, where he was wounded and obliged to withdraw his troops to Ticonderoga, which place he commanded. He was commissioned brigadier-general, Feb. 21, 1777; joined General Washington's army in New Jersey; commanded a division at Brandywine and opposed the passage of the river at Chadd's Ford by the Hessians, and at the close of the day safely withdrew his troops. He led the attack at Warren Tavern; was attacked by a superior force at Paoli, Sept. 20, 1777, and effected a successful sortie which enabled him practically to hold his ground, but subjected him to a court of inquiry, which acquitted him with the highest honors. At the battle of Germantown he drove the enemy back before the general retreat was expected. He went into camp with Washington's army at Valley Forge, where he made a successful raid into the British camp, capturing much needed provisions and supplies. He took part in the battle of Monmouth under Lee, and after being ordered to retreat by Lee, Washington assumed command, and Wayne brought his troops into position and repulsed a bayonet charge by Col. Henry Monckton, securing victory to Washington's army and the death of every British officer engaged in the charge. He commanded a corps of light infantry organized by Washington in 1779, and on July 15 marched toward the garrison at Stony Point on the Hudson, advanced in two columns at midnight, surprised the British pickets, gained the center of the fort, and though severely wounded, entered the fort supported by his aides and received the surrender of the garrison.' For this exploit a gold medal was presented him by congress, and he received the thanks of the general assembly of Pennsylvania and of congress. He failed in an effort to capture Fort Lee in 1780, and on Jan. 1, 1781, he succeeded in amicably quelling the mutiny in the Pennsylvania line. He joined Lafayette in Virginia, and took part in the battle at Jamestown Ford, where he fell back after a desperate charge in which he succeeded in relieving Lafayette, who was in danger from a projected manoeuvre of the enemy, thus saving the entire army from defeat. He served at Green Springs and at Yorktown, where he opened the first parallel, covered the advance of the second parallel on the 11th. and supported the French allies on the 14th. He joined Gen. Nathanael Greene after the surrender, and on June 23, 1782, he was attacked by a body of Creek Indians under a British officer who gained possession [p.337]of his artillery, but by a bayonet charge, he put them to rout, and personally slew a Creek leader. He took possession of Charleston, S.C., after its evacuation by the British, Dec. 14, 1782, and was brevetted major-general, Oct. 10, 1783, when he returned to Pennsylvania, was chosen to the general assembly, and was a member of the convention that ratified the U.S. constitution. He removed to Georgia, where he took possession of a tract of land granted him for his services in the Revolution; was a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1787; and was a representative in the 2d congress, 1791-92, but his seat was contested by James Jackson, and declared vacant March 21, 1792, and he refused to be a candidate for re-election, John Milledge taking his seat June 22. He was appointed by President Washington general-in-chief of the U.S. army with the rank of major-general, and the senate confirmed the appointment, April 3, 1792. He organized a body of troops which he drilled and trained in Indian warfare, and in 1793 he marched against the hostile tribes in the northwest. He built Fort Recovery near Greenville, Ohio, and Fort Adams, at the junction of the Maumee and Anglaize rivers. In August, 1793, he led 1000 men down the Maumee to Fort Miami, and offered the Indians peace if they would lay down their arms. On their refusal he defeated them at Fallen Timbers; laid their country waste, and built Fort Wayne at the junction of the St. Mary's and St. Joseph's rivers. On Aug. 3, 1795, be signed a treaty with twelve tribes of Indians, and while on a visit to Pennsylvania, he was appointed U.S. commissioner to treat with the northwestern Indians, but while descending Lake Erie to take possession of the forts previously held by the British, he fell ill with the gout, was landed at Presque Isle, and soon after died. He received the appellations of "Mad Anthony Wayne," "Dandy Wayne,"" Black Snake," "Wind" and "Tornado." A marble monument to his memory was erected in Rachnor churchyard, Chester county, Pa., by the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati, July 4, 1809, his son, Isaac Wayne, having removed his remains to Rachnor churchyard, Pa., early in that year. He died in Presque Isle. Pa., Dec. 15, 1796.

Notes for MARY WAYNE:

Letter from Mary Keating, Gabriel Wayne’s daughter.

WATERFORD, IRELAND 1785

GENERAL ANTHONY WAYNE,

This comes from your near kinswoman, Mary Wayne, daughter of your Uncle Gabriel, who was married to a Captain Keating, belonging to Ireland. He brought me to Ireland, where I have resided ever since the first Year of hisPresent Majesty to the throne, and I am now a widow and my children have grown up able to provide for themselves. I feel an earnest desire to return to my native country, but (on account of my long absence from it) I know not where to find one branch of my family, except yourself, dear cousin, whose name is made popular by the active part you took in the American War, which you have gallantly continued in pursuing the enemies of your country. May it please God to grant you success and preserve you from the dangers which your courage and gallant conduct stand open to.

I wish this letter may come to your hand, for I am assured you will answer it to my satisfaction. In the first place, I wish to know if my brother William is alive or where I may write to him, or if you can give me any information of my sister Susannah or where to write to her; and please inform me if your own two sisters are living, Peggy and Nancy, or, if they are married, their names and where they live. Now, my dear cousin, I have written to you very often unsuccessfully, yet I do not attribute it to you or any neglect of yours.

I think my letters must not have reached your hand, as you have been mostly upon some expedition or other. I hope by the time this comes to your hand you will have conquered all these difficulties and have returned to your own house, sat

down in peace, and are enjouing the fruits of your toil, with both the congratulations of your friends and relations,as I am one of those who will rejoice at your felicity.

I think this letter can’t fail coming to your hand, as I shall direct it to General Washington to be forwarded to you. I am confident from your noble character that you will be ready to fulfil the disire of your near kinswoman, one you could not forget, as we spent out infant years under the roof of your dear father’s house, Isaac Wayne, as sister and brother. If my brother is alive, let him know where to write to me.

Your ever affectionate kinswoman,

Mary Keating

P.S. If you will be pleased to answer this, direct to

Mary Keating, Michael Street, Waterford, Ireland.

(Please note that she asks about her brother William, He is the GA Wayne’s line of descent)

She had several children.....

Notes for COL. ISAAC WAYNE:

Captain Isaac Wayne, third son of Captain Anthony Wayne, who was born in Ireland in 1699, acquired the home plantation from his father and spent his life there, naming the estate "Waynesborough." He was a captain in the provincial forces during the Indian troubles of 1755, raising a company for the defense of the frontier after Braddock’s defeat. He was stationed at De Puy’s, now Monroe County, until January, 1756, when he was ordered to Nazareth, Northampton County. He recruited another company when trouble was renewed in 1757-58, and served on the frontier. He was elected to the Colonial Assembly in 1757, and was annually reelected thereafter until 1764. Captain Isaac Wayne was a prominent member of the vestry of St. David’s Church, and accumulated a large estate. He greatly improved the mansion at Waynesborough, which descended, at his death in 1774, to his eldest surviving son, General Anthony Wayne.

Captain Isaac Wayne married, in 1738, Elizabeth, daughter of Richard and Margaret (Phillips) Iddings, of Chester County. She lived many years after his death, dying at "Waynesborough" in May, 1793, at the age of eighty-four years.
